    Interview Summary
    David and Hannah Stahl discuss their families' move from Poland to Vienna, Austria after World War I; the differences and similarities between Polish and Austrian Jews; the process of assimilation by Polish Jews into Viennese society; their marriage in 1937, their honeymoon in the United States, and their decision to return to Vienna after a few months; the changes they experienced following the Anschluss in May 1938; the challenges and fears they faced and their decision to emigrate; the process of applying for visas and passports; their temporary move to Germany; their escape to Paris, France; their time in Paris; Mr. Stahl’s experiences after the beginning of the war when he was arrested and sent to an internment camp in the south of France in 1939; the end of the bureaucratic process to acquire visas for the United States; and their exit from Europe in February 1940.

    The Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project conducted the interview with David and Hannah Stahl on September 4, 1984. The interview was received by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives Branch in April 2007.
