    Edith Wellisch (née Hannah Oesterreich), born on January 24, 1926 in Stropkov, Czechoslovakia (now in Slovakia), discusses her childhood in Czechoslovakia; being raised by her aunt after her mother died in childbirth; her family life; the antisemitism she experienced; the changes she experienced in 1938 after Hitler's seizure of the Sudetenland; the increasing restrictions on Jewish life, and her family's anxiety; her journey to Budapest in 1942; the news she heard of deportations; her efforts to return to Czechoslovakia; her experiences while crossing the border; the false identification papers she received; her efforts to pass as non-Jewish; the work she performed; the family she lived with; her postwar experiences; her work in a Jewish hospital in Bratislava; her efforts to leave Communist Czechoslovakia; her marriage and family; her arrival in the United States in 1954 after living in Italy, France, and Belgium; and her life in the US.
