Nathan Krieger, born in Wojnicz, Poland on February 21, 1917, describes never knowing his father, who left Poland for the United States in 1921; being one of six children and the only one of his siblings to survive the Holocaust; working as a tailor’s apprentice when he was twelve years old; getting married in the ghetto in 1943; being interned in Auschwitz from 1943 to 1945; being forced to do hard labor; being severally malnourished; being selected work in the camp kitchen, peeling potatoes; how a Jewish leader helped him acclimate to new foods, so that he would not get sick; working in the camp laundry; being sent on a Death March from January 18 to April 15 1945 from Poland through Germany into Czechoslovakia; reuniting with his wife, who had been in Auschwitz and other camps; living in the displaced persons camp in Landsberg, Germany; immigrating to the US in 1949; starting his own men’s clothing business in 1955; living in New York, NY initially; moving his coat factory to Georgia; experiencing antisemitism in Georgia; experiencing a nervous breakdown; raising a family in New York; his belief that the Holocaust could happen again; and his concern about the attitudes of Jewish people in their relations with others.

Andrew Steiner, born in 1908 in Dunajská Streda, Czechoslovakia (Slovakia), describes having a younger brother and sister who lived in Palestine; being 31 years old when the war began; living in Brno, Czech Republic and Bratislava, Slovakia during the war; specializing in architecture and being excluded from deportations because of his skills; the deaths of many of his colleagues in concentration camps; working in the underground in Bratislava; organizing three labor camps in Slovakia that were for Slovaks in an attempt to prevent deportations; organizing a furniture factory where the Jews could work and be exempt from deportation; living in constant danger because the Nazis knew about his underground activities in Slovakia; paying off officials to prevent the deportation of Slovak Jews; deciding to immigrate to the United States after the war; living in Cuba from 1948 through early 1950, waiting for his visa to the US; continuing his work in Cuba and working with one of the country’s leading architects; arriving in Miami, FL in 1950; settling in Atlanta, GA, where he met his wife and started a family; designing the campuses of Georgia State and Emory Universities and serving as the chairman of two professional urban design committees; not being very religious but having friends in the Jewish community; designing a synagogue in Atlanta; his belief that people have to analyze mistakes of the past so that they do not repeat them in the future; and being most proud of his work for the Jewish community.
