Andrew Steiner, born in 1908 in Dunajská Streda, Czechoslovakia (Slovakia), describes having a younger brother and sister who lived in Palestine; being 31 years old when the war began; living in Brno, Czech Republic and Bratislava, Slovakia during the war; specializing in architecture and being excluded from deportations because of his skills; the deaths of many of his colleagues in concentration camps; working in the underground in Bratislava; organizing three labor camps in Slovakia that were for Slovaks in an attempt to prevent deportations; organizing a furniture factory where the Jews could work and be exempt from deportation; living in constant danger because the Nazis knew about his underground activities in Slovakia; paying off officials to prevent the deportation of Slovak Jews; deciding to immigrate to the United States after the war; living in Cuba from 1948 through early 1950, waiting for his visa to the US; continuing his work in Cuba and working with one of the country’s leading architects; arriving in Miami, FL in 1950; settling in Atlanta, GA, where he met his wife and started a family; designing the campuses of Georgia State and Emory Universities and serving as the chairman of two professional urban design committees; not being very religious but having friends in the Jewish community; designing a synagogue in Atlanta; his belief that people have to analyze mistakes of the past so that they do not repeat them in the future; and being most proud of his work for the Jewish community.
