Star of David badge with Jood worn by German Jewish refugees

Star of David badge likely worn by either Albert or Irene Heppner, the parents of Max Amichai Heppner, in Amsterdam after the German occupation authoritrs made them mandatory for all Jewish person. Max's parents fled Germany in 1933 when the Nazi regime took power. Max was born that October. In 1942, after Max’s mother was arrested and released, the family went into hiding in the Dutch countryside. The underground later placed them on the Janssen family farm. Max's maternal grandfather Jacob was killed by the Germans in 1943. In September 1944, Max and his parents were liberated. Albert died while returning to Amsterdam in summer 1945. Max and Irene emigrated to the United States in 1946.
