    Interview Summary
    Harold B. Herbst, born in 1912 in New York City, NY, describes his childhood; studying medicine at Wayne State University in Michigan until he joined the army in 1942; his attachment to the 107th Evacuation Hospital; training in Belfast, Northern Ireland and then following the United States First Army after the June 1944 Normandy invasion; his attachment to the United States Third Army under George S. Patton in December; and helping to liberate Buchenwald shortly after the SS guards fled the camp in April 1945.
