Fred Deutsch, born on November 13, 1932 in Moravska Ostrava, Czechoslovakia (Ostrava, Czech Republic), describes his life before the war; his family’s move to Uherský Brod, Czechoslovakia at the start of World War II because of fears about the future; going into hiding with his family in a number of places across Czechoslovakia, including the district of Stará Turá and Bánovce nad Bebravou; his family’s liberation from hiding in April 1945 when their caretaker informed them that Soviet-Romanian units had liberated the neighboring town; traveling through Czechoslovakia after the war; immigrating to Israel in 1949; and immigrating to the United States in 1959.
