Le Rire : journal humoristique paraissant le samedi, v. XXI, No. 240, 5th year, June 10, 1899

Object | Accession Number: 2016.184.234.11

Issue of the popular French satiric journal, Le Rire [To Laugh] which was celebrated for its front and back cover full color illustrations. The cover drawing is by C. Leander, captioned, Maitre Demange, Defenseur de Dreyfus. Many artists created drawings for it, including Toulouse-Lautrec, Steinlein, and Cappiello. The journal began as a Belle Epoque publication in 1894 under its founder Felix Julien. It was a time of great political and social unrest and the magazine did its best to make fun of them all. The issues in this collection date from the 1894-1899, the years of L'Affaire Dreyfus, a political scandal revolving around anti-semitism that inflamed France. The magazine is one of the more than 900 items in the Katz Ehrenthal Collection of antisemitic artifacts and visual materials.
