    Overview

    Interview Summary
    Ringailé Zotovas (née Jonynas, 1924-2021) was born October 14, 1924 in Kaunas, Lithuania and was raised on a farm in a small village about 50 kilometers away. Her parents, Zigmas Jonynas and Antanina Pnausinaitis, had two other children: Fiennes (b. 1922) and Rasa (b. 1937). Ringailé discusses her father coming from nobility; her father serving in the Russian Army during World War I; her mother being an artist and studying in St. Petersburg; the family farm exporting dairy products to Germany; living with a Jewish family during the week to attend school, and graduating in 1941; speaking Lithuanian and German at home; living comfortably in a large house; selling their house before the Soviet occupation and moving to their summer home where her grandparents lived; Soviet soldiers occupying the farm buildings; her family temporarily sheltering several Jews; hiding 6 year old Luba Leymuter, whose parents were killed in 1943, and Luba’s subsequent murder by the Nazis; studying at the University of Kaunas in 1943 and graduating with a degree in physical education in June; marrying her uncle’s brother; fleeing with her husband, brother, and parents by horse and carriage to Germany, and surviving the war in Berlin; attending school in Frankfurt am Main after the war; immigrating to the United States and settling in Chicago; having two daughters; working in industrial chemistry; divorcing her husband and later marrying Alexis Zoster; and becoming a painter. Following the interview, Ringaile shows the following items: 1) photo of her mother’s family, the Pnausinaitis, including her mother, her younger sister, her mother’s parents and her older sister; 2) photo of a choir with Ringaile in front flanked by two boys and her friend, Suzanna on the 3rd row right; 3) her parents, Zigmas and Antanina in 1924, and 4) medal from the Lithuanian president to her parents for saving the lives of Jews during the Holocaust in Lithuania issued in September 2014.
