    Interview Summary
    Herman Malvet (né Majerovic), born on January 1, 1935 in Bardejov, Slovakia, discusses growing up in both Bardejov and Katowice, Poland; his father who was an industrialist; the German attack of Poland on September 1, 1939, at which time he was in Katowice; his father packing up the family, including other relatives, in to two automobiles and fleeing eastwards; reaching the area under Soviet control, at which time their car was confiscated in Lvov (L'viv, Ukraine) by the Soviet intelligence agency (the GUGB); the arrest of his father and his release soon after; his family’s return to Katowice, where two German officers had already sequestered a front bedroom of their apartment; his family’s escape to Slovakia, where they were able to live, sometimes in hiding, until 1943; the deportation of his mother in 1942; fleeing to Hungary in 1943; living with false papers as Christian Poles; the arrival of the Germans in March 1944; fleeing to Slovakia; their arrest in early fall 1944 and deportation to Auschwitz; and escaping the transport by jumping from the moving train and his father’s successful jump as well.
