    Interview Summary
    Inez Nunez, born on January 7, 1924 in Tunis, Tunisia, discusses her parents; her father, who was the head of a hospital in Tunis; speaking Italian with her family and socializing only within the Italian-speaking community; not being observant; her brother Claudio, who was born in 1927 and her sister Lucia, who was born in 1930; her family’s origins in Livorno, Italy; attending the Liceo Italiano until the age of 15; hearing a speech by Mussolini that was broadcast on the radio in September 1940 during which Mussolini proclaimed that Jews were no longer considered Italian citizens; being expelled from the Italian school; attending a French school; obtain her teaching certificate; her father losing his job during the war and being interned by the Vichy authorities in a concentration camp because he was Jewish; their Italian maid who continued to work for them even when they could not pay her; a room being requisitioned in the family apartment by an officer during the German Occupation of Tunisia starting in November 1942, and later by a British or American soldier when Tunisia was liberated in May 1943; getting married after the war to Victor Berrebi, a landowner and farmer from Sfax; her husband losing his land and staying home with their children while Inez taught Italian in French schools to support the family; leaving Tunisia in 1971 and being assigned a teaching position in Bois l’Abbé in the Val de Marne region surrounding Paris, France; her husband’s sudden death; teaching in a high school near the Porte d’Italie in the south of Paris; her children and grandchildren; and her friends from the Tunisian community that migrated to France.
