    Interview Summary
    Eva Deutsch Costabel, born in 1924, discusses growing up in Zagreb, Yugoslavia (now in Croatia); her father Arnold Deutsch, who worked in the chemical industry while her mother Ann Deutsch (née Weinberger) ran a fashion boutique; the deportation of her father and his murder at Treblinka; escaping with her mother and sister to Crikvenica on the Yugoslav Adriatic coast, which was occupied by the Italians; being imprisoned being the Italians in two camps, Kraljevica and then on the island of Rab; being liberated from Rab in 1943; joining the partisans and working as a nurse in the small mountain village of Kordun; being the only Jewish girl among peasants and communists; making sketches; her talent being noticed by the partisans and being placed in the group's propaganda unit; not wanting to join the communists, and fleeing to the Croatian coast; going to Italy; and spending the duration of the war in a refugee camp in Bari, Italy.
