    Interview Summary
    Rose Gelb (née Mermelstein), born on July 20, 1921 in Kivyazhd, Czechoslovakia, (now Kamianske, Ukraine) discusses her farming family; their very good relations with Christians; the Hungarian occupation; her elder brothers being taken for forced labor in 1941; her father’s deportation to Poland in 1941; officers letting her father go after three months; her father returning home; the liquidation of Kivyazhd to Berehove ghetto in April 1944; her deportation to Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp; the train, arrival, selection, and tattoos; forced labor for six weeks; the death march to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in January 1945; liberation by the British on April 14, 1945; the British taking survivors to Bratislava displaced persons camp; returning home; staying with a neighbor in Kivyazhd for two to three weeks; going to Föhrenwald displaced persons camp; trying to immigrate either to the United States or Israel; reuniting with one brother; returning to Czechoslovakia; marrying; living in Ústí nad Labem (near Prague) until 1964; and immigrating to the United States in 1964.
