    Joseph Heller, born on September 21, 1919 in Warsaw, Poland, discusses Lemberg (Lwów); being the oldest child; his family’s communist activities; being drafted into the Soviet army in 1939; Russians distrusting Poles; being sent to forced labor in Siberia in 1941; escaping, travelling, and ending up back in the Soviet army; going to Italy postwar; studying medicine; and immigrating to the United States in 1963.
