    Interview Summary
    Ludvik Wieder, born on October 16, 1917 in Turna, Czechoslovakia, discusses when Turna became part of Hungary in 1938; the arrest of his father; the forced selling of his father’s business; being drafted into the Hungarian army at age twenty; forced labor at a Hungarian military labor camp for three years; forced labor in Yugoslavia and Romania; living in hiding in Budapest as a non-Jew for one year in 1944; and immigrating to the United States in November 1949. Author of “I Promised My Mother” about his motivation to refuse to go to Russian front as ordered and his experiences in Budapest.

    The Gratz College Holocaust Oral History Archive donated the interview to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 2017. The interview was recorded for the American Gathering of Holocaust Survivors in 1985.
