    Interview Summary
    Theodore Zeelander, born on April 27, 1910 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, discusses his middle class, non-religious family; being a member of Maccabi; his family moving to Belgium when he was twelve; relations between Jews and non-Jews prewar; heightened anti-Jewish sentiment in 1939; his father going to London to put valuables in a vault in 1939; fleeing south to France two days after the German invasion of Belgium in 1940; receiving aid from the French government; living for a few months in Vichy; living in Toulousse from 1940 to November 1942; living in a large castle with twenty five other Dutch Jews; going to Spain with the help of the French and Dutch governments in November 1942; taking the ship Matista Komilyas to Jamaica; living in a refugee camp for six months; working for the Dutch army as director of transportation in Curacao from 1943 to 1945; and immigrating to the United States in 1946. Father of Norbert Zeelander.

    The Gratz College Holocaust Oral History Archive donated the interview to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 2017. The interview was recorded for the American Gathering of Holocaust Survivors in 1985.
